Did you ever think that you would need to call on your Black Ops training when you got into the server space business? How did it help you?
I never imagined that the skills I had gained in my youth would be required again. In fact, I had worked hard to put that former life behind me and distance myself from my past. I suppose in some sense there was always a bit of the former soldier in the ‘business’ Matt Weatherly; the discipline and work ethic that was instilled in me never goes away completely and helped me become a success. But as far as my physical and combat abilities – they definitely helped me on that terrible night.
What went through your mind when you heard that your son, Luke, had been injected with RX-17 and was effectively a bomb waiting to go off?
Terror. Utter and complete terror. How would anyone feel when their child is threatened? A parent’s instinct kicks in and the thought of protection consumes your every thought. Couple that with knowing that your son has the potential not only to lose his own life, but cause the destruction of thousands of others, and you’d completely understand how I wanted to kill the sick individual that caused all of this.
How do you think things would have turned out if you’d called the police when John contacted you and told you to go home or Luke would die?
I’ve thought of this myself sometimes. What would have happened if I did things differently? I have spent hours second-guessing many decisions I made in those hours. Was everything I did correct? Or legal? Definitely not. But I think if I had called the police when I was first contacted, my son would be dead right now. John was hell-bent on succeeding and, let’s face it, the man was bright enough to have several options at his fingertips.
What one thing do you wish you’d done differently?
I wish I had kept my emotions in check a bit more. Innocent lives were lost because of my reactions. That’s a guilt I’ll have to live with for the rest of my life.
Have you kept in touch with Detective Larsen? How is he doing?
We do keep in touch a bit. An email now and then just to say hello and catch up. We keep promising to grab dinner one night but it doesn’t seem to happen. I think we’re both still very raw from what happened that night and seeing each other in person would be a bit too much. But I hear he’s doing well. He keeps saying he’s happy, and he certainly deserves it.
How did your relationship with Ashley change over the course of the ‘internal threat’ and in the time since?
Stay tuned for the answer to this in the sequel to Internal Threat…
Thanks, Matt. I look forward to hearing more from you soon.

Internal Threat Review
The plot
Just as Matt’s life is getting back on track after his wife’s death, he learns his successful business holds the key to a ruthless killer’s plan. Finding his son’s nanny brutally murdered and his son’s health deteriorating with every minute that passes, Matt has no choice but to do as he’s told and take down a series of computer systems that will cost the lives of millions. As he races around nighttime Los Angeles, trying to stay one step ahead of the police, the body count rises and despair sets in. Then his son disappears and Matt can take no more.
The hero
Matt Weatherly is a Black Ops veteran who was left to take care of his two year old son, Luke, when his wife, Katie, was killed in Afghanistan. He found his salvation in Luke when sorrow and anger were taking over his life. Having left the military, he built a prosperous business over the following seven years, only to find himself the pawn in a chilling plot to take down military defenses. As the story progresses, we get to know the real Matt, his love for Katie, his protectiveness of Luke, his business acumen and his hoped-never-to-be-used-again battle readiness. He is everyone’s favorite hero with a natural instinct to put right the wrongs he comes across. He stays calm under pressure and is not afraid to do what it takes, while looking out for innocents that happen to be in the way.
The cast of supporting characters
Ashley – the would-be actress turned tenacious businesswoman who is Matt’s main server space competitor. She is fun, flirty and astute, a skilled negotiator with effortless charm when she needs it. Her desire to out maneuver Matt, however, gets her more than she bargained for when she unwittingly finds herself in the midst of his struggle with John, the killer. She is the partner he needs to help unravel John’s master plan and look after Luke along the way.
Detective Larsen – the cop who puts more store in getting the job done than in making friends along the way. He is a tad old fashioned but effective. He does not crave the limelight but cares about his cases and the people they affect. He knows something isn’t right when he finds Matt’s breadcrumb and goes all out to help him when circumstances go from bad to worse.
Emma – the computer geek who wants to make a difference. It is her military defense system that is under attack and she will go to any length to protect it.
The ‘could not put it down’ parts
Most of the book is pretty full on, driving you to read on, page after page. I particularly enjoyed Matt’s thread as he really had the weight of the world on his shoulders and I had to keep going to find out what on earth he could do to turn the plot upside down.
The craziest parts
Matt leaping across the chasm between two buildings but missing the fire escape on the other side until … just in time his hand catches.
“Any chance you have access to a helicopter?” Matt asked the Detective. “As a matter of fact … I know just where to find one.” Lucky!
Where I was left wanting more
I want to know what happens between Matt and Ashley but it seems we’ll have to wait for the sequel. But what was that with Matt’s ending? Can it be real?
Why it was good
This is non-stop thriller from start to finish. It is packed with well-developed characters that you get to know and understand, exciting action, unexpected plot twists and turns and heart-thumping suspense. The blossoming relationships between various characters are enjoyable to watch amongst all the goings on, adding depth to the fast pace. The plot is cleverly woven but not too complex to bog you down. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the climactic ending.
